  1. DIII-D relevant work Presented byR.L. Boivin byR. Boivin April 2006 PERSISTENT SURVEILLANCE FOR PIPELINE PROTECTION AND THREAT INTERDICTION

  2. New Counter-MSE system is being added to the DIII-D MSE system 24 Channels Viewing 210 Beam will Provide Improved EFIT • 8 New Core • (1.675 ≤ R ≤ 2.00 m) • 16 New Edge • (2.00 ≤ R ≤ 2.28 m) • All operational in FY06 • Improvements: • R ~ factor of 3 • (Er) ~ factor 2 in core, factor of 5–6 in edge • (Bz) ~ about 20–30%

  3. Apparatus for measuring polarization and reflectivity of MSE related components- (LLNL Internal funding with GA) Measurement of metal and dielectric mirror properties In-situ mirror polarization monitor inside DIII-D - over many (or few discharges) Study on metal Mirrors  in lab Can resolve 1 degree changes

  4. New Technique: |B|and Bq/BT from Stark Split Da Emission 330˚ • |B| gives information on internal field structure • Bq/BT can be obtained from the s1 and p3 Stark components • Expected sensitivity: • |B| ~ 0.07 T (0.004BT) • Bq/BT ~0.01 (2%) • Pitch angle ~0.6˚ • Spatial resolution ~1.5–5.0 cm • Student thesis work (N. Pablant) • ITER relevant diagnostic- can it Complement MSE?

  5. Counter-CER: Add Eight New Tangential Views, Looking at Counter Beam Line- Better rotation characterization • Comparing views looking at co vs. counter beams: • Difference of two views ~2x cross-section correction HUGE! • View 210 beams from 165R0 • Essentially duplicate central tangential system viewing 30LT from 315T0 and 345R0 • New views will couple to new Sarnoff CCD detectors

  6. Relocated ECE antenna brings in better resolution and time response • ECE radiometer upgrade • ∆z, ∆ø determined by antenna pattern, ∆R by IF bandwidth • Shown is typical radial coverageatBT = 2.0 T • 400 MHz filters already installed for chs 1-16 • Change will improve our resolution of small amplitude modes and related activity University of Maryland

  7. The ECE upgrade allows new insights into Energetic Particles physics The ECE measurements give radial profiles of the TAEs and RSAEs. The RSAEs show strong localization near q-min. Crosspower ECE8 & ECE9 TAEs Crosspower ECE14 & ECE15 RSAEs This is very important for Energetic Particles Study in ITER!

  8. The addition of Quartz micro-balance in lower divertor will help in diagnosing Carbon migration • Measure material deposition (e.g. Carbon) in real-time • 2 locations behind the 45deg tile (newly contoured) • Electronics in vertical port (outside vacuum) • Critical diagnostic for ITER related R&D • Help in characterizing deposition (including mirrors) Boundary

  9. A prototype tangential interferometer and polarimeter is being installed • Start at CO2 wavelength • Use 1 turning mirror and 1 retroreflector • Very similar to ITER geometry • Look at coatings, calibration issues and others. • More chords are possible

  10. Small but measurable rotation are expected n DIII-D • Small rotation are expected at CO2 wavelength (and typical DIII-D conditions (2.1T) • Digital system is expected to resolve those rotations

  11. The new divertor shelf brings in new capabilities for optical and spectroscopic diagnostics • Filterscope view rearranged from top, MDS spectrometer from below • New shelf gives new access to inner leg and private flux region • Will be a component of measuring flows in the divertor region • Will take advantage of the newly contoured tiles • New telescope will help develop (ITER) relevant diagnostics in divertor area

  12. The scanning probes have all been upgraded • DiMES • Modifications to hydraulics (extended height) • Continue mirror testing (ITER) • Porous Plug experiments • Midplane scanning probe • Addition of airlock • Becomes MiMES • Mirror testing can also be done at the midplane • Strongly continue the support of mirror testing • New mitigation techniques?
