Goals • Address scientific and generic issues that could directly affect the design and performance of ITER diagnostic systems • Develop solutions to diagnostic environmental issues encountered in a BPX such as ITER • Perform scientific assessment of diagnostic systems and how they can support ITER operating scenarios • Develop and propose new techniques where performance may be marginal, or incompatible in a DEMO environment • It is expected that the role and goals of the Diagnostic Group will evolve considerably in the next few years.
Specialist Working Groups • The ITPA-Diagnostic Group has presently 7 SWG to help in specific issues • Gather large pool of experts across the world • Groups: Thomson, Reflectometry, Neutron, Spectroscopy, Beam Aided Spectroscopy, First Mirrors, Radiation Effects • Over 150 participants • We are planning a reorganization of these groups in the next few months • New groups, different alignment, new leadership • Plan to complete by next meeting in April 2009
High Priority Items -1 • Development of methods of measuring the energy and density distribution of confined and escaping -particles • Develop and apply ORBIT code for studying feasibility of an escaping alpha detector (completion target: Fall 2009) • Study compatibility of scintillator-based detector with radiation environment and signal to background ratio (target: Fall 2009) • Evaluate usefulness of an activation-based detector with limited time resolution (target: Spring 2009) • Provide conceptual design of an activation-based detector for possible baseline inclusion (target: Spring 2009) • Continue development and evaluation of possible alternate techniques (target: long-term) • Develop and assess possible alternates to CTS for confined alpha particles (fast ions) diagnostic (now medium priority)
High Priority Items -2 • Assessment of the calibration strategy and calibration source strength needed for neutron diagnostics • Develop proper Monte-Carlo model for ITER for proper assessment of calibration techniques and plans (target: model - Spring 2009, assessment - Fall 2009)
High Priority Items -3 • Determination of life-time of plasma facing mirrors used in optical systems • Identify best material for mirrors under erosion and/or deposition conditions • Model particle fluxes for planned mirrors (main chamber, divertor) • Develop and test techniques for erosion/deposition mitigation • Evaluate other effects (eg Helium blistering) • Roadmap has been elaborated • Workplan is under review • Prioritization is beginning (target: Spring 2009) • See Joint Experiment DIAG-2 • Significant additional resources are required to complete this task
High Priority Items -4 • Development of the requirements for the measurement of hot dust, and assessment of techniques • Work with the DSOL group to evaluate expected hot dust levels and impacts in ITER (target: Fall 2009) • Field and test capacitive micro-balance diagnostics in several devices across the world (target: Fall 2011) • Suggest making this a new Joint Experiment - DIAG-4
High Priority Items -5 (new) • The assessment of impacts of invessel wall reflections on diagnostics • Evaluate existing applications/software for the calculation of light reflections (target: Spring 2009) • Assess impacts of these reflections on ITER optical systems, and guide possible mitigation and/or relocation as needed (target: Spring 2010) • Build database of reflection coefficients for first wall material(s) as close to expected conditions (target: preliminary - Spring 2010)
High Priority Items -6 (new) • Assessment of the measurement requirements for plasma initiation and identification of potential gaps in planned measurement techniques • Based on existing devices’ experience, assess existing measurement requirements and adjust as needed (target: Fall 2009) • Identify gaps in techniques and propose alternatives (target: Spring 2010)

Upcoming meetings • 16th meeting - St-Petersburg, RF (April 20-24, 2009) • Special session candidate: fusion product diagnostics (to be confirmed) • 17th meeting - Pohang, Korea (September 2009) • Special session candidate: real-time data analysis and control (basic and advanced) and/or measurement required for plasma initiation • 18th meeting - US (likely to be tied with HTPD Spring 2010) Provisional • Also, workshop on Radiation Effects on Burning Plasma Diagnostics (IFE and MFE) - Spring 2009
