Introduction • Problem: reduce the amount of off-chemistry heats produced due to recycling steel. • Inaccurate scrap steel composition coming from scrappers leads to off-chemistry heats. • Scrap steel is combined with iron ore to produce line pipe steel, which has a very specific composition of alloys. • Design a new process that prevents this issue, preferably before arriving at ArcelorMittal.

Brainstorming • All steel will be stamped after production • XRF analysis of steel while at shredding facility • Composition sensor in BOF • Electronically stamped steel via microchip
X-Ray Fluorescence • XRF uses a type of wavelength spectroscopy in order to determine the composition of the steel. • High energy photons emitted into the steel displace electrons causing an energy jump. • Energy jump emits a fluorescence of certain wavelength that is measured by the XRF. • Most metals concentrations can be determined within 2% error.
Implementing XRF • The steel arrives at the shredding facility. • Conveyor belt sorting system • XRF analysis • Data aggregated • Shipped to ArcelorMittal
