What is Malaria? • spread by the Anopheles female mosquitoes • 4 types • P. falciparum, P.vivax, P.ovale, P. malariae • When bitten, parasites put into the blood stream, travel to the liver
Symptoms • chills, fever, pain, aches, headaches, sweating, nausea, coughing, diarrhea, yellowing skin and whites of eyes, kidney, liver failure, bleeding problems, coma, seizures, can reach a fever of 106° • starts to appear 1-3 weeks after bitten
Treatments • Chloroquine and primaquine • Chloroquine also can prevent malaria • with treatment about 15%-20% die • insecticide-treated nets
Statistics • 1,300 cases diagnosed in the USA • poor countries don’t have the knowledge about malaria to prevent it • ¾ of all victims are children • Cerebral malaria will cause death to 93% children affected
Regions Affected • Central and South America • Asia (India , Southeast and the Middle East) • Eastern Europe • South Pacific
Occurrence • 100 countries infected • 40% of world population is at risk • > 80% cases in Sub-Saharan Africa, the worst affected region
