  6. Assignment 1:RRRs PURPOSE: Rants, Raves, and Reflections are intended to create dialogue between you and I regarding your expectations of HKIN 426, your understanding of health education/promotion, physical activity promotion, reducing sedentary time, physical education, my teaching methods, your service learning experiences, etc.. With your permission –and when relevant – all or part of your submissions may be discussed or shared with the class.

  7. 8. Assignment 1: RRRs For each submission, adhere to the following guidelines: 1. 9. Assignment 1: RRRs RRRs will be graded usually within 24-48 hours. I will use track changes in Microsoft Word to provide corrections and/or feedback. Each submission will be graded out of 10 and will contribute 5% to your final grade. Please keep all your graded submissions until final grades are submitted. FYI – sample RRRs (with permission from 2012 HKIN 426 students) are posted on my webpage at www.stfx.ca/people/akolen through the courses link on the left-hand side and then under the course description for HKIN 426. (It is possible that I will be able to include these on Moodle too?)

  10. Assignment 2:Health Education andService Learning Reflection Part A: Participate in a service learning experience Part B: Written reflection of your service learning experiences Part C: Oral reflection/interview of your health education and service learning experiences

  11. Before I describe this assignment … let me tell you a little bit about service learning

  12. Service Learning • Service Learning … • Is a pedagogic approach • Links theory to the “real world” (Dicklitch, 2003) • Helps students to experience the subject matter in an immediate or real way • Catalyzes students’ academic and self-development (i.e., values, goals, etc.) while promoting broader notions of social responsibility through the links fostered between the town (i.e., community) and gown (i.e., university/colleges) (Eyler, 2002; Matthews-Gardner, Fitzgerald, & Gitelson, 2005)

  13. Service Learning is Not Volunteering, Experiential Learning, or Internship • Service learning differs from volunteering because of the academic component • no grade for the volunteer efforts – only for the assignment • Service learning differs from experiential learning and internship in that: • All involved parties should benefit with the needs of the students balanced with the needs of the community(Karaskik, 2007) • Reflection is a major part so the service and academic components become mutually reinforcing(Astin et al., 2000) • Elicits and develops responsible citizenship(Madsen & Turnbull, 2006)

  14. I believe it is important that you understand what service learning is – before you commit to it!

  15. Part A: Participate in a service learning experience (No formal grade is given for this portion of the assignment) 1. Formally participate in a service learning experience. See the possibilities available (document posted in Moodle). There are a limited number of choices and spots available. Each service learning experience requires approximately 15 hours of volunteer time. Many of these experiences begin immediately; therefore your selection must be done quickly. 2. If you choose, Fit 4 Life or Fit 4 Tots, speak directly to me or send me an email with your preferred option for Fit 4 Life (2:05 to 4:35 p.m. on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) or Fit 4 tots (11:00 – 12:35 p.m. or 12:25 – 2:00 p.m. on Fridays) 3. For all other options, see Sheena Cameron (scameron@stfx.ca ; Room 209 Immaculata Hall; 867-3757). Once a suitable placement has been made, make contact (phone, email, or in-person) with the identified representative of the program. 4. If you did not complete a criminal record and child abuse registry ‘check’ first term or in the previous year, please do so ASAP. The child abuse registry form can be given to me along with a photocopy of either your driver’s license or health card. The criminal record check must be completed at the RCMP station and you require a letter from me indicating you are a volunteer to save you the administration fee ($25) as well as your government issued identification. 5. Service Learning Agreement forms will be completed in class, once the term is underway.
