Junior Advisory Council Program Summary and Approach
Vision and Mission Vision • Our vision is that the youth of central Pennsylvania develop a lifelong passion for the eradication of hunger through education, social interaction and empowerment. Mission • Our mission is to provide a forum and sponsorship for a diverse group of high school students to come together to learn, engage and create the next generation of innovative programs impacting the fight against hunger.
Council Organization • Six to ten high school student volunteers chosen through partnership and consultation between central PA school districts and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank • Council term assigned for one academic year (September - May) • Central Pennsylvania Food Bank staff/board will supervise • One student and one Food Bank representative will co-chair the Junior Advisory Council
Council Objectives and Activities • Promote the ongoing support and advocacy for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s vision and mission. • Discuss and learn about hunger awareness, Food Bank operations, food supply chains, national and international trends, etc. • Be inventive and lead new initiatives! Produce hunger awareness programs or food drive events executed in the council term (Sept – May). • Discussion and workshop health, wellness and nutrition opportunities. • Exposure to local hunger needs through service and visits • Build external awareness and recognition for the council’s efforts.
Becoming part of the Junior Advisory Council • Three easy steps to becoming involved in the fight against hunger: • Students should be encouraged to submit the attached application and scholarship essay for consideration through their guidance counselor. Each submitted application and essay will be considered for the Junior Advisory Council. • Completed student information should be sent to: Junior Advisory Council Committee Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 3908 Corey Road Harrisburg, PA 17109 • Submission Deadline April 18, 2014 1. Becoming part of the Junior Advisory Council • Applications and essays will be reviewed by Food Bank representatives • Finalists, their families and school officials will be invited to an event where finalists will present their essay and the winner of the essay contest will be announced
Benefits and Rewards • The winner of the essay contest will receive a $1,000 college scholarship courtesy of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and GIANT Food Stores. • Each finalist will receive recognition by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, certification of Junior Advisory Council membership and a $500 scholarship.
