Vietnam War SS7H3e Explain the reasons for foreign involvement in Korea and Vietnam in terms of containment of Communism
After WWII • At the end of WWII many Vietnamese wanted to reorganize the country under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh (who was communist) • To stop the spread of communism the United States supported the French efforts to reclaim colonial control over Vietnam.
In 1954, when the French gave up control of Vietnam, the United States stepped in. • At the Geneva conference which ended the French Indochinese war the country was temporality divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. • Within a year there would be a nationwide election to decided what kind of government the country wanted.
No elections were ever held and the country remained divided until 1975. • The United States went to war with North Vietnam to try to keep the country from becoming communist. • After thousands of lives were lost and billions of dollars were spend Vietnam finally became a communist country.
The country reunited and became known as the People’s Republic of China.
