Formation • Remnants of Tropical Storm Nora • Cyclone formed over the central Bay of Bengal on Nov 8 • Then travelled north as it was intensifying • Winds up to 185km/h (115mph) • 966 hPa (mbar) • Made landfall on the coast of East Pakistan around the time of high tide with 15 to 20 ft high • Sixth cyclonic storm of the 1970 North Indian Ocean

  3. When and Where • November 12, 1970 • Struck East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India’s • West Bengal • Most severly affected was Thana, Tazmuddin • Over 45% of 167,00 population lost

  4. Deaths and Injuries • deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded and one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern time • Up to 500,000 lives were lost in the storm, primarily from the storm surge that had flooded much of the islands of the Ganges Delta • 100,000 people were missing

Damage • Cyclones are prone to Bangladesh because of the Ganges river delta that is very large and flat that covers most of southern Bangladesh • Land is below 180 meters (600 ft) apart from Chittagong district • Regions lie less than 39 feet above sea level • Strength was equivalent to a category three hurricane • $86.4 million • 85% of homes in the area were destroyed or severely damaged
