Use of CAHAN • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires all states to have a Health Alert Network (HAN) • CAHAN is the official Public Health Alerting System used and administered by the California Department of Public Health • CAHAN use and training is available to local public health jurisdictions, hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, Indian health clinics, and other public health partners for emergency planning and response to public health events

  3. CAHAN Purpose • Support emergency preparedness planning and communication in preparation for and during a public health emergency • Facilitate alerting, notification and collaboration between state, federal, local and other public health emergency preparedness partners on a 24/7/365 basis

  4. CAHAN Overview • CAHAN has a fully redundant system out of state • CAHAN offers vertical and horizontal alerting • There are currently over 22,000 participants on CAHAN

  6. Alerting • Alerts can be received multiple ways • e-mail, portal, phone, alphanumeric pager, and fax • Participants determine which way they want to receive alerts based on priority levels • high, medium, and low level alerts • Current alerts may be posted on the CAHAN portal

  11. Alerting Cross Jurisdictional Alerting: • Each PHIN role can alert their peer role throughout the county, region, and state • Example: Each Health Officer can alert any other Health Officer in their county, region, or within the state

  12. CAHAN Licenses Alerting:Users have the ability to view the directory as well as receive and confirm an alert. Collaboration: Users can access the Document Library to create folders and documents. This is also the first step in being able to send an alert. Administrator: Users can create new users, add roles and organizational units, run reports, and keep the role structure current by managing their organization.
