Job Shadow 2012Trendwood By Mark Waxman
Introduction • My name is Mark Waxman • My major is accounting and I will be graduating in December • I am part of Beta Alpha Psi and I am on the committee for Relay for Life • I enjoy accounting and in my future career I hope to go into auditing
Job Shadow • I job shadowed at Trendwood. • This is their website http://www.trendwood.com/ • I followed around their CFO Lee Nelms • He is one of the founding members of Trendwoodand has been there over 27 years • Mr. Nelms show me all the aspects of Trendwood’s production process • Additionally Mr. Nelms showed me the accounting process that helps their managers make decision to facilitate the production process
Trendwood • Trendwood manufactures children’s bedroom furniture • Trendwood started out as a small company producing waterbeds when they were popular • Once waterbeds became less popular they started to produce children’s bunk beds • There is picture on the next slide of their original bunk bed • One interesting part of Trendwood is that they usual produce their bunk beds within 3 weeks of being ordered on a just in time basis
Manufacturing at Trendwood • On my job shadow I was showed all the aspects of the production process from the direct materials that are put into the product to the packaging of the final product • Trendwood has a very quick manufacturing process where their product is completed in only 3 days • The product goes through different stations to be complete.
Step by Step Manufacturing • Wood for the furniture is delivery to the site • The wood goes through the Mill and is cut in specific sizes for the product being produced • That wood then goes into the jigging area where the product is put together • Then the product is stained or painted • After drying the product is then packaged
Accounting at Trendwood • Mr. Nelms showed me all the managerial accounting information he and the other managers use to make decisions. • I learned about checklists that make sure all of their accounting processes are inputted correctly • I learned about the variance they use to determine if they are within in their budgets (ACC 302) • I learned about how they cost their products to determine their prices for their items
New Product and Manufacturing Support • Additional to shadowing Mr. Nelms I was able to meet with the person involved with new product creation and supportive process of manufacture. • I was able to see the new products they were thinking about producing • He showed how they determine the cost of this new products to see if it would be profitable • On the supporting side we talked about the documentation that follows the product all the way through the process so they know exactly what it is and what has been put in it anywhere in the process
Job Shadow Experience • I had an amazing experience job shadowing at Trendwood. • Before going to Trendwood I never thought I would want to be in industry but after visiting Trendwood I have a new found respect for manufacture and idea of taking materials and creating a product that people want to buy • I recommend applying for the job shadowing program. • It is a lot more interesting to learn about subjects in an actually experience real world situation rather than just learning about subjects in the classroom
