Novel red algae in the Picoplankton? Klaus Valentin, Helga Mehl and Linda Medlin AWI Bremerhaven
multicellular red algae Cryptophyte nucleomorphs & environmental seq. „Novel“ red algae (27 env. Seq.) But: no unicellular red algae in the tree!
Aim: Establish an 18S dataset for the unicellular red algae - Get cultures (Göttingen, John West) - Isolate DNA - Run PCR - Sequence products OR - Clone Products, check by RFLP - Sequence different RFLP types - Compare to database ... is it really a red alga?

Summary - The „novel red algal clade“ probably is rhodophytic. - The clade is not at the basis of the red algae but rather represents a fourth group of Porphyridiales. - Potentially there is a second red algal clade present, representing a sister group of the Cryptophyte nucleomorph, possibly closely related to Cyanidium caldarium.
