VNET5Advancing User-Centred Product Creation in Interactive Electronic Publishing Elke-Maria Melchior ACit – Advance Concepts for interactive technology GmbH
Overview • What is VNET5 • Objectives • Approach • Issues for discussion
What is VNET5 • Thematic Network of VNET5 consortium members and members of IST projects • Focus is on Interactive Electronic Publishing projects • Duration: 2 years, until January 2003 • Consortium • ACit – Advance Concepts for interactive technology GmbH • Performance by Design Ltd • Hypermedia Open Center Group, Politecnico di Milano • Department of Human Sciences & Design, TU Sofia • ergonomics & technology group, ETH Zürich • TEC lab research group, Università della Svizzera Italiana • Complementary expertise in user-centred product creation and evaluation • Scientific, technical and business backgrounds
VNET5 objectives • Promote user-centred product creation and a common approach to user validation • Raise the level of user validation skills and competence in IST projects • Analyse generic requirements for user acceptance • Document and disseminate resources for user validation
VNET5 support • Individual coaching for project teams • based on the project’s needs and an assessment of their maturity for user-centred product creation • to help develop competence for user validation • eg validation planning, supervision of initial activities, help with analysis and reporting • user validation clinics for project teams who have come up with questions in the course of their user validation activities • Events • VNET5 workshops (hands-on experiences) • VNET5 sessions • Resources -www.vnet5.org
Issues for discussion • Projects try to postpone issues of exploitation. Exploitation is more of a problem in research projects than in industry. • Economic success requires that the hurdles of acceptance at many stages must be overcome (see diagram next slide). • Practitioners tend to overestimate their ability to act professionally in areas outside their core expertise. • Learning experience gained in VNET5 and previous support projects: Face-to-face training in workshops, providing high quality selected material, and coaching are most effective.

Issues for discussion (continued) • Stimulating projects to pursue a competent and well planned user-centred product creation process is essential for meeting user and market needs. • Quality control and management is a function where projects should not be left alone. • But, evaluation in general must be organisationally separated from the constructive responsibilities for research and development.
