  8. Origins • The internet has its origins in the cold war • US response to Sputnik • In 1958 Eisenhower created ARPA – the Advanced Research Projects Agency. Launched in 1957

  9. Origins • Ted Nelson started Project Xanadu in 1960 with the goal of creating a computer network with a simple user interface • Coined the term Hypertext in 1965

  10. Origins • Out of ARPA, Joseph Carl RobnettLicklider (nicknamed Lick) publishes memos in 1962 predicting that computers could be interconnected in a global network through which everyone could access data and programs from anywhere.

Origins • The first “internet” was called the ARPANET (it was made by ARPA) • “…ARPANET came out of our frustration that there were only a few powerful research computers in the country, and many researchers, who needed access to them, were separated from them geographically…” -Dr. Charles M.   12. Origins • The first 4 ARPANET computers used different operating systems, forcing designers to come up with a common set of rules they all could follow. This was the Network Control Protocol (NCP). • In 1983, ARPANET switched to the TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL & INTERNET PROTOCOL SUITE (TCP/IP)

  17. W3 Builds quickly • 1992 - Over 1,000,000 computers connected to the Internet • 1993, both the UN and the White House create their websites • 1994, Amazon and Yahoo Launch • 1995, Sun releases Java, Ebay, AOL & MSN go live

  18. 1996 - The “Browser Wars” • Fight between “Netscape Navigator” an “Microsoft Internet Explorer” • IE Wins but uses illegal means according to a 1998 anti-trust case • IE peaks with 96% of internet users in 2002 (then Firefox begins eating away)

  19. More History • 1997 - Business.com sold for $150,000 • 1998 - Google and Paypaldebut • 1999 - Business.com sold for $5,700,000 • 2000 - The Web now has more then a billion pages • 2001- Wikipedia is started and P2P filesharing developed
