Origins • The internet has its origins in the cold war • US response to Sputnik • In 1958 Eisenhower created ARPA – the Advanced Research Projects Agency. Launched in 1957
Origins • Ted Nelson started Project Xanadu in 1960 with the goal of creating a computer network with a simple user interface • Coined the term Hypertext in 1965
Origins • Out of ARPA, Joseph Carl RobnettLicklider (nicknamed Lick) publishes memos in 1962 predicting that computers could be interconnected in a global network through which everyone could access data and programs from anywhere.

W3 Builds quickly • 1992 - Over 1,000,000 computers connected to the Internet • 1993, both the UN and the White House create their websites • 1994, Amazon and Yahoo Launch • 1995, Sun releases Java, Ebay, AOL & MSN go live
1996 - The “Browser Wars” • Fight between “Netscape Navigator” an “Microsoft Internet Explorer” • IE Wins but uses illegal means according to a 1998 anti-trust case • IE peaks with 96% of internet users in 2002 (then Firefox begins eating away)
