SWBAT: Understand how the periodic table is arrangedPeriod 3 Bellringer Find the group and period for: Nitrogen Manganese Lithium
Three Categories: 1) Metals: • Usually shiny • Malleable and ductile • Conducts heat and electricity. Shown in Blue!!
Categories: • 2) Nonmetals: • Colorful, can be dull • Brittle, Hard or Soft • Poor Conductors • . Shown in Yellow!!
Shown in Pink!! 3) Metalloids: - have properties of both metals and nonmetals. • Ex. Silicon • - Shiny • Not malleable or ductile • Brittle • Poor conductors compared to metals but better than nonmetals.
Metalloids • Sometimes called the “stairstep elements” • We will be memorizing them! • Boron (B) • Silicon (Si) • Germainium (Ge) • Arsenic (As) • Antimony (Sb) • Tellerium (Te) • Astatine (At)
Period 2 Bell ringer • Find the element: • Period 6, Group 11 • List 3 properties of metals • List 2 properties of nonmetals • Describe the properties of metalloids
Bell ringer • Find the element: • Period 6, Group 11 • Gold • List 3 properties of metals shiny, malleable, conduct electricity • List 2 properties of nonmetals Usually colorful, brittle • Describe the properties of metalloids combination of metal and nonmetal
Metalloids • Sometimes called the “stairstep elements” • We will be memorizing them! • Boron (B) • Silicon (Si) • Germainium (Ge) • Arsenic (As) • Antimony (Sb) • Tellerium (Te) • Astatine (At)
The Periodic Table SWBAT: -Classify elements into families -Describe the characteristics of each family
Families on the Periodic Table • Columns are also grouped into families. • Families may be one column, or several columns put together. • Families have names rather than numbers. (Just like your family has a common last name.)
Alkali Metals • 1stcolumn on the periodic table (Group 1) not including hydrogen. (Colored Orange) • Very reactive metals, always combined with something else in nature (like in salt). • Soft enough to cut with a butter knife
Alkaline Earth Metals • Second column on the periodic table. (Group 2) Colored Yellow • Reactive metals that are always combined with nonmetals in nature. • Several of these elements are important mineral nutrients (such as Mg and Ca
Transition Metals • Elements in groups 3-12 Colored Pink • Less reactive harder metals • Includes metals used in jewelry and construction. • Metals used “as metal.”
Halogens • Elements in group 17 (Colored green) • Very reactive, volatile, diatomic, nonmetals • Always found combined with other element in nature . • Used as disinfectants and to strengthen teeth.
The Noble Gases • Elements in group 18 Colored Blue • VERY unreactive, monatomic gases • Used in lighted “neon” signs • Used in blimps to fix the Hindenburg problem.
