Urban Geography Introductory Concepts
Essential Vocabulary • What is a “city” • cultural and economic definition • Large settlement • High-density settlement • Residents are not directly involved in agriculture
“City” also has a distinct and separate “political” definition • “city” = “municpality” • The real estate and space incorporated into the “city of Fort Atkinson”, or “city of Milwaukee”
Urbanized area • The actual “footprint” of the high-density settlement • Does not have to be contiguous • Often is much, much larger than the incorporated “political” city, or municpality • “underbound” city • The remaining area is often loosely called the “suburbs”
MSA (metropolitan Statistical Area) • Census definition • Based on counties
CMSA (Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area) • Two “MSAs” merged together because there exists a substantial connection between the two (commuting proximity)
PMSA (Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area) • The individual MSAs within a CMSA are referred to as PMSAs • Examples are Milwaukee within the Milwaukee-Racine CMSA, or Chicago within the Chicago-Gary-Kenosha CMSA.
