Startup Sequence • Boot • Similar to DOS – POST, Bootstrap program & diagnostics • Load O/S • Can be found in Flash, TFTP server, or ROM • Load Configuration File • Can be found in NVRAM, TFTP, or entered from console
Startup Commands • Router # show running-config • Router # show startup-config • Router # reload • Router # startup • Router # erase startup-config • The commands show config, write term, and write erase, used with Cisco IOS Release 10.3 can also be used for short term
Setup Mode • [ ] indicate default value – press ENTER to accept • If no default, a ? Appears – enter your choice • CTRL+C will end the process and allow you to begin again • A YES response to the prompt will load the commands into RAM and save as startup-config file in NVRAM • You can turn features on with setup, but you cannot turn them off. • Setup does not support many of the advanced features of the router
Global Parameters • Initial prompt is router > • To rename router, from enable Exec mode • Router # hostname VKP • You can enter secret encrypted password as part of setup procedure • You can also enter secret encrypted passwords for virtual terminal
Lab Activity • Startup router using default startup • Do this at least twice • Make certain you understand procedure • Record notes in your journal
