  1. Sophomore Planning Night 2012 Welcome class of 2014 Presenters: Tiffani Traina, M.A. Stephanie Burns, M.S.

OUR GOALS: • Provide Sophomore Students and Parents with a “road map” for the two years of high school. • Provide Students with the ability and tools to connect current and future courses with post-secondary goals and aspirations. • Provide Students and parents with resources and information to make decisions so students can work towards their future goals. • Provide Students and parents with the “next steps” for success.

  3. El Segundo High School Career Pathways • PLW : Engineering Pathway • 9th grade: Introduction to Engineering Design • 10th grade: Principles of Engineering • 11th grade: Advanced course being determined • 12th grade: Capstone course and project • Arts, Media and Entertainment Pathway • 4 year sequence of courses which includes a capstone project, internship or AP Studio Art course. Specific course selection sheet in Mrs. Miller’s office • We are exploring more pathways…stay tuned!

  4. LIFE PREP/ COLLEGE PREP • *A-G REQUIREMENTS: • A = Social Studies (2.5 yrs) • B= English (4 yrs) • C = Math (3 yrs – Algebra, Geom, Algebra II) • D = Science (Biology, Chemistry – 3 pref.) • E = LOTE (2 yrs., 3 pref) • F = VPA (1 full consecutive year same VPA) • G = Elective ( 1 yr - every student will meet this category in the course of their four years). • *All courses completed with a grade of C or higher • **10th and 11th grade GPA used for college apps.

NEXT STEPS… • Get Involved: Service organizations, clubs, athletics • Pay attention to timelines • Create collegeboard.org and actstudent.org accounts • If you took the PSAT this year - access Collegeboard.org • Take the PSAT in junior year – we want all juniors to sign up • Explore californiacolleges.edu (college matching site) • Research Universities/ look at student profiles • Plan for SAT/ACT in spring of 2013 • Consider courses for SAT II subject tests • Keep checking internships and consider career options
