Disability YA Fiction According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “Of the 53.9 million school-aged children (aged 5 to 17) in the U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population, about 2.8 million (5.2 percent) were reported to have a disability in 2010.” If it is important for our students to see themselves in the literature they read; and, if it is equally important for our students to see the “other” in the literature they read, then it is time to include fiction that explores disability in our classrooms.
