As much as I desire to build up this resiliency trait in our students to prepare them for their futures, I want you as professionals to grow in your resiliency, especially in regards to the learning that’s needed in order to be capable of preparing our students for their future. Techno-Resiliency
The windmill feels the wind and moves to tap it’s power. Full-on resistance would produce no power. Resiliency harnesses the power for good uses.
How do you view the end of the day and the beginning of a new one? What do you feel when you watch the sun set on the 31st of December? Do you dwell on the disappointments of the past or look forward to the hopes of a new year? Resiliency looks forward, resistance is glued to the past.
When fishing in the surf, do you back off because of the large wave threatening to break over you, or look for the opportunity when the wave returns to the sea?
Do you dwell on the casts that came back with no fish and no bait, and some times no hooks or sinkers… Or does your resiliency revel in that one big one you brought in?
Do you regret the annual pruning of your dead branches, or come back for a new year of fruit-bearing achievements?
Do you regret the soil your seeds were planted in, lacking the resources you think you need to thrive,… … or, do you find another way to rise above like the semi-parisiticMunji plant (or as we call it the “Christmas Tree” plant) that uses its roots to tap into other plants roots systems to meet its needs?
Does your resiliency run dry as you stare at the hole you find yourself in,… … or do you recognise when the problem is beyond you and seek the help you need?
Do you dig yourself in and try to resist the onslaught, or flex and take the wave for a ride?
Do you resist outside forces seeking to shape you and break you, or like our remarkable Australian landscape do you embrace the chiseling and marvel at the new you?
Are you like the early explorers Lawton, Blaxland and Wentworth who repeatedly followed the valleys through the Blue Mountains only to be blocked by cliffs, or do you persist and rise above taking the high road across?
Do you have a vision of what you want to achieve and commit to working within the constraints of the tools and technology made available as the brave workers who pieced the Harbour Bridge together, and problem solve for years like the Opera House architect until a workable solution comes to mind?
“I embrace the notion for how to deal with the unexpected: ‘Creative Adjustment!’ God provides what is needed, even if I do not always realize it. So, I pray for the grace, the strength, the wisdom, and the courage to be resilient in this life.” – unknown author
I look ahead at what I envision my task to be this year in supporting your growth in the use of ICT, and I shrink. But what I look forward to are the small forward steps I desire to celebrate with you, and the relevance to your students’ futures that you will discover. May God bless you and your classroom in 2011.
