1927 • Phonovision was the easiest video format. It was never widely adopted, and was intended for practical uses only.
1950 • TTK launches Japan’s first magnetite-coated paper-based recording tape, the isoni-Tapei, and Japan’s first magnetic tape recorder, the G-type.
1955 • Sony builds Japan’s first transistor radio, the TR-55
1956 • The Ampex Corporation used magnetic tape technology made by German scientists during World War II to create the first video tape recorder, the Ampex VRX-1000, introduced in 1956.
1963 • Sony launches the world’s first compact transistor VTR, the PV-100
1968 • Sony introduces Trinitron, its line of aperture grille cathode ray tube televisions with the Sony KV-1310
1973 • Rather than storing video on film rolls, this was the first time it was stored on a disc. Developed by RCA.
1975 • The first available video cassette recorder was the Sony Betamax, introduced in 1975.
1977 • Was an early DVD format. Unlike DVD, Laser Discs were un compressed so the over all quality of the sound and image was actually better than later DVD’s that became popular. Developed by Philips, MCA, and Pioneer.
1985 • Sony releases the 8mm camcorder.
1987 • Sony introduces the DAT tape
1988 • Sony kills Betamax
1989 • Sony Handycam/CCD-TR55, a compact and lightweight, passport-sized 8mm camcorder.
1992 • Sony introduces their portable TV, the Sony watchman
1995 • The first DV camcorder was the Sony DCR-VX1000, introduced in 1995. The camera featured a 3-CCD imaging device for video quality in a home video camera.
1997 • Sony/HDW-700 Worlds first broadcast-use HD camcorder
2004 • Sony develops new 4K SXRD high-resolution LCD panel
2005 • Sony HDR-HC1, world’s smallest digital HD video camcorder.
2006 • Blu-Ray Disc designed to surpass the DVD format. Originally showcased in 2000. Weren't released till 2006. Developed by Blu-Ray Disc Association.
