ACADEMIC ADVISINGTaking an Integrated Approach: General Education + Major
UNC CHARLOTTE General Education Requirements
Reviewing Transfer Credit • Program Exemption: • Community College AA or AS degree (not AAS) • Look for INST 1111 • Equivalencies • Trf credit for a UNCC course • Cannot be repeated • Exemptions • Trf credit exempts from Gen Ed requirement ALWAYS CHECK THE CAPP AUDIT!
Being Strategic(when requirements overlap) Use a template to ensure students don’t duplicate gen ed clases that are required for the major Advising check sheets should make overlaps clear Emphasize integrated nature of Gen Ed and the major (Gen Ed + Major = Program of Study)
Allowing Exploration(to keep options open for a minor, 2nd major, or change of major) Mathematics / Logic (the 2nd course) Taking two math courses makes sense if a student is interested in a program that requires calculus Taking statistics makes sense if a student is interested in the social sciences
Allowing Exploration Sciences Chemistry and Physics are a foundational courses in many STEM fields Social Sciences Except for ECON 1101, all of the options are required courses in those majors/minors
Allowing Exploration LBST Choosing an LBST taught by faculty from a given department can give students a taste of what that field is like
