Hair Growth • Blood supplied at the base of the hair follicle stimulates hair growth • Cells divide and grow in the base of the follicle • New cells that are forming at the base of the hair push the old cells are pushed away from the blood vessels and die, becoming keratinized in the process
Sebaceous gland associated with Hair Follicles • Sebaceous glands near the hair follicles secrete sebum, an antibacterial oily substance • Decreases the infections on your skin • Waterproofs and lubricates the skin and hair
Hair Color and Style • Dependent on the amount and type of melanin you produce • The more melanin, the darker the hair • White hair occurs in the absence of melanin • Red hair occurs when the melanin is altered and has iron it in • Flat hair shafts = curly hair • Round hair shafts = straight hair
Hair Lifespan • Eyelashes lasts around 3 to 4 months • Hair on your head lasts about 3 to 4 years ** Ingested substances can become part of a hair’s composition, so the longer the length of the hair the longer the record of what was consumed by the individual.
Nail Anatomy • Nail Matrix: Tissue the nail protects that produces the nail body • As new cells grow they push the older ones out causing the cells to become flat and translucent • The blood vessels beneath the nail give it it’s pink color • Nail Root: base of the nail underneath the skin, where the nail body originates • Nail Bed: Skin beneath the nail matrix • Cuticle: Fold of tissue that covers the nail root • Nail Body: The part of the nail that we see that is made of keratin • Lunula: Thick layer of cells at the base of the nail that appear crescent in shape
Nail Function • Protect the ends of the fingertips • Allows humans to pick up smaller objects than they would be able to without the nail
