  2. Storyline • Takes place in late 1960’s • Group of young hippies form a tribe and live together • They experiment with drugs, struggle with their views on the Vietnam War, and have a lot of sex

  3. Storyline • From the New York Times review: “Singing ‘Aquarius,’ the opening declaration of peace-and-love values, the performers are both a confrontational pacifist army, daring the audience not to accept them, and a litter of puppies, huddling together for warmth and reassurance.”

Characters • Claude – torn between parents’ wanting him to fight honorably and friends’ wanting him to be in the tribe • Berger – leader of hippies, only cares about his satisfaction, hurts friends but feels guilty and makes up for it • Sheila – completes the love triangle between Claude and Berger, most intelligent, attends NYU

History of hair • James Rado and Gerome Ragni met in 1964, began writing Hair • Said Rado, the inspiration came from a “combination of some characters we met in the streets, people we knew in our own imaginations… there were also a lot of articles in the press about how kids were being kicked out of school and growing their hair long.” • Premiered at Public Theatre in New York City in October 1967 • Premiered on Broadway April 1968

  6. History • Went up for two Tony awards in 1969 • Original production had 1750 performances and closed in July 1972 • Many revivals around the world since then • Made into a film version in 1979 • Helped to premier the ne “Rock Musical” • Broke barriers with their interracial cast and profanity

  7. NUDE SCENE • Was like “Whoa” • “WTF” • “Didn’t see that coming” • Obviously did not believe in shaving or waxing • “Inspired by two men who took off their clothes to antagonize the police during an informal anti-war gathering” (Wikipedia)

  8. Themes • Nudity played a big role in hippie culture • Was a rejection of sexual repression • Wanted to live freely • Symbol of naturalism, spirituality, honesty, openness, and freedom • Other themes include drug use, pacifism, environmentalism, religion, and astrology

Review of the review • Writing style uses the language of the show • Casual, not super big words • Quotes song lyrics to make a point about the characters and themes • Almost makes the review a story, personal rather than unemotional • Uses metaphors – “… they’re tearing down the house in the production…. Any theatergoer with a pulse will find it hard to resist their invitation to join the demolition crew.”
