California State University System (CSU) • 23 campuses • A-G subject requirements • GPA: 10-11th only • Minimum GPA 2.0 • No letters of recommendation • No transcript (Self Report all classes & grades) • Application window: • Oct. 1st to Nov. 30th www.csumentor.edu
University of California System (UC) • 9 campuses • A-G subject requirements • GPA: 10-11th only • Minimum GPA 3.0 • No letters of recommendation • No transcript- (Self Report all classes/grades) • List extracurricular activities • Essay required • Application window: • Nov. 1st to Nov. 30th www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions
UC/CSU Application Information • UC/CSU A-G course list (refer to page 2) – if not on our list, do not report it • UC/CSU eligibility requirements (A-G Requirements) (refer to page 3, 4) • UC Prompts (refer to page 5) • additional suggestions from UC Santa Barbara (refer to page 6)
Private & Out of State Universities • Admission requirements vary by institution, but most follow similar UC/CSU guidelines in terms of subject requirements and test requirements. • Check individual campus websites to determine admission requirements! • SAT/ACT • GPA: 9- 12th Fall semester • Extracurricular Activities • Essay/Personal Statement • Letters of Recommendation • Deadlines vary greatly; be sure to adhere to each school’s policies!!!
College Application Choices • Early Decision- Binding (Should clearly be applicant’s 1st choice) • Early Action – Non-Binding • May apply to more than one school • Must decide by May 1st • Regular Decision • Rolling– Can apply anytime, notified several weeks after applying
Community and Junior Colleges • Apply in February & March • No SAT/ACTrequired, but will need to take a placement test (EAP) • Transfer to a 4 year is generally easier than for freshman, but… You need to have a PLAN! • Affordable • Associates degrees and certifications offered • Transfer requirements: • Public – must have completed 60 units (approx. 2 yrs) • Private – some after 1 year
MBHS Protocol- Transcript Requests • 1ST - Turn in Authorization Form!!! • All transcripts are ordered through Naviance • You MUST see Ms. Tamayo in person to confirm all requests. • You must sign the FERPA waiver & authorization before seeing registrar! • See her before/after school or during lunch. • If you are requesting it for NCAA you must have them request it. • Keep your College list updated • Transcripts can not be sent to schools if they are not on your list.
MBHS Protocol- continued • Common Application, Private, and some Public Schools • Have a “School Report” or “Counselor Recommendation” form • May require recommendations • Common Application – everything will be sent electronically • Create an account. • Complete all personal information & education information. • Sign FERPA waiver before going to see registrar! • Schools not on the Common Application or without electronic submission: • Print and bring the School Report/Counselor Recommendation form to the counselor (Have senior classes listed and sign waiver!) Look on Naviance to see delivery type:
Letters of Recommendation • Check with each college about what is required • Ask NOW and IN PERSON (before you request in Naviance!) • Put request on Naviance • Naviance- all teachers are in there • Com. App.- will need correct spelling and email address of person asking • Counselor Recommendation • Brag Sheet, Resume, Student/Parent Input Questions: Naviance • Teacher Recommendation • Transcript, Resume, and whatever else they request from you.
Essays – Personal Statement • UC - 2 essays (refer to page 5, 6) • Common Application – 1 essay, plus supplements • Private Schools • Out of State Schools • Start NOW! • Revise, revise, revise! Uses ACES!!! • Do not send without having someone review it. (teacher, counselor, ACES)

Common Myths • Senior year grades don’t count • I must declare a major • I should know what I want to do for the rest of my life • “C” students don’t go to 4-year colleges • CSU’s are not good schools • Community Colleges are only for student who didn’t do well in high school • Out of state is more expensive
How to Survive Senior Year • Meet with your teachers often • Plan ahead, use a calendar • Make use of tutoring – ACES • Form study groups • Your acceptance may be rescinded because of poor performance

Don’t Forget: • Workshops: • October - November: Lunch time and after school in the Library • CAL-SOAP provides weekend workshops in your neighborhood • check the bulletin frequently for specific dates and times • Scholarships, Scholarships, Scholarships • Holidays: • Do not get stuck during the holidays, plan to submit before breaks • UC/CSU – submit before thanksgiving • Common App/Private schools – submit before winter break if possible • Follow up: • If you have concerns, contact the admissions office directly and early. • If you requested something, check in person to make sure it has been done. • If your application requires a midyear report: notify your counselor and request a new transcript at the beginning of 2nd Semester
