Just-in-time Math Object Library Stella PortoSharron Love (Performtech)
The project • Goals • To provide just-in-time multimedia objects for clarification/explanation of basic mathematical concepts used in several UMUC courses
The project • The approach • Outsourcing + in-house development • Proof of concept done through outsourcing • Involvement of key people in-house • Underlying structure done for further in-house development
Outsourcing process • Discussion of ideas with outside company • Clear definitions of goals for future in-house development • Costing and definition of scope for proof of concept project • SME in-house
Outsourcing process • The library structure was first developed • Four objects were used to show how the library would work • Each object done through several iterations • In-house SME produced the written narratives • Documentation and all source provided from outside company
Details of implementation • Functional Description of Object Library and Object Template • Architecture is composed of three primary components organized into a structured directory hierarchy. • a main template (base.swf) • a generic object template (template.swf, to be renamed to reflect each unique object) • an organizational xml file (menu.xml).
Details of implementation:Organizing and Accessing the Objects

Lessons learned • Advantage of using outsourcing to boost in-house development • Reduction in cost • Shorter project start-up time • Need to have POC within the institution for in-house development • This person needs to be involved • SME within the institution always works best and reduces cost • Each party needs to do what it does best
Future plans • Plan for in-house development • CSI and Course-Dev • Connect with interested stakeholders • Get input for future objects • Inventory of existing objects (GSMT + SUS) to avoid repetition
Just-in-time Math Object Library Thanks! Presentation will be available on the web tomorrow. I will send out the link…
