Mission of the American Red Cross • Founded by Clara Barton on the Civil War battlefield • Part of the International Red Cross Movement • Humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter to: • Provide voluntary aid to sick and wounded armed forces during a time of war • Act as a medium of communication between family members and members of the U.S. armed forces and • Carry out a system of relief during disasters and help people prevent and prepare for those calamities (Taken from 1905 Congressional Charter of the American Red Cross, revised May 07

  4. Organizational Components Programs and services are integrated at the Local, State, National and International levels to include: • Manpower– Over 1 million Volunteers & ~30,000 paid staff • Blood Regions - 35 • Chapters - 741 • Stations - 58 Stateside and Overseas

What We Do • Emergency Communications Around the World • 648,920 emergency communications services last year assisting 185,406 families • Access to Financial Assistance thru partnership with all Military Aide Societies • Over $5.6 million provided last year • GTKU Briefings reached 930,573 last year • Casualty Travel Assistance Program (CTAP) • Military and VA Hospital Outreach Program • Info & Referral and place to meet at local Chapters • Training and Volunteer Opportunities
