Health and Safety Program • DEFINITION A systematic plan, involving all personnel, designed to prevent workplace injuries and diseases.
Reporting safety hazards • Required! (OHS Reg 3.10) • “Whenever a person observes what appears to be an unsafe or harmful condition or act the person must report it as soon as possible to a supervisor or to the employer, and the person receiving the report must investigate the reported unsafe condition or act and must ensure that any necessary corrective action is taken without delay.” • Action required: • If you can correct it, do so. If outside of the scope of your authority, report it to your supervisor as soon as reasonable.
Refusing Unsafe Work (OHS 3.12) • 3.12 (1) A person must not carry out or cause to be carried out any work process or operate or cause to be operated any tool, appliance or equipment if that person has reasonable cause to believe that to do so would create an undue hazard to the health and safety of any person. • Stop work and report it to your supervisor • REMEMBER: The School District#38 does not expect you take chances with your health or safety… if you suspect something is wrong, stop work and ask.

OHSR Requirements • Statement of aims & responsibilities • Inspection of premises • Written instructions • Management meetings • Investigation of accidents • Maintenance of records & statistics • Instruction & supervision of workers
Safety Policy & Philosophy • Purpose: • Workers and workplaces safe and secure from injury, illness, and disease. “The Richmond School District is committed to providing a safe and healthy working and learning environment for all students and staff.”
Health & Safety Committees Includes organizational structure of: • Joint Committee meetings • Safety at staff meetings • Reporting and resolving hazards or safety concerns
First Aid & Emergency Services Describes: • First aid assessment levels • Designated first aid attendants • first aid kits & room requirements • Emergency / fire safety plans • Safety plan (threats)
Fire and Emergency • In the event of a fire or other emergency • Take direction from building fire safety team • Evacuate via nearest safe exit and proceed to assembly areas; Report • If you discover a fire • Activate pull station and initiate evacuation • Phone 911 to report at fire at: location address • Fight the fire only if fire is small and you are not alone and trained in use of fire extinguisher • Do not re-enter the building before “all clear”
Earthquake • Take cover under tables, desks or crouch against an interior wall • Stand clear from windows to avoid flying glass • Do not stand under light fixtures, shelves, filing cabinets or other potential fall hazards • Don’t leave safe position until shaking has stopped • Follow instructions of the Fire Wardens • Do not call 911 or family members, it will overload the telephone system • Check all phones to ensure they are on their receivers • Includes cellular phones • Emergency Supply at each school
