MILLENNIALS: Who are they? • 75% have working mothers • Ethnically diverse: 34% are non-caucasian • 33% born to single mothers • 28% born to Boomers who waited to have children • Structurally diverse: 47% have divorced parents &/or blended family
MILLENNIAL Characteristics • Parents support and protect them • Happiest and most confident generation • Desire to be around their family • Own lots of stuff • Media has closely followed this generation and it caters to them
MILLENNIALS are Sheltered • Huge amount of Child Protection Policies have been created since 1982 (kid safety rules, lockdown of public schools, etc) • Do things together with their parents • Colleges strive to provide a safe environment catering to their needs (so they have no need to be resourceful) • Parents established FERPA and are now frustrated because they cannot gain access to their adult children’s records!
MILLENNIALS areCONFIDENT • High level of trust • Very optimistic • Expect the ideal job • Grade inflation is an issue
MILLENNIALS arePRESSURED • Stressed • Ambitious • Sleep Deprived • Pressure to excel in many areas • Grade Driven increase in cheating!
MILLENIALS areMULTITASKERS • Constantly going and doing • Multitasking is a way of life • ZERO tolerance for delays
MILLENIALS areCONVENTIONAL • Increase interest in religious activities • Beer binge drinking is decreasing • Less likely to have drug usage and premarital sex • 82% indicated no relational problems w/ their families
