  1. Osmosis Notes If you are stranded on a raft in the ocean, is it better to drink the salt water or no water at all?

  2. The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane. Only water moves during osmosis. Nothing else. Water continues to move until equilibrium is reached on both sides of the membrane.

  3. Placing a cell in an isotonic solution: Isotonic means Same Strength Concentration of particles is the same inside and outside of the cell. Equilibrium exists but nothing happens to the appearance of the cell.

  4. Placing a cell in a Hypertonic solution Hypertonic means Above Strength Solution has a higher particle concentration than the cell. Water moves out to try to balance. Cell Shrivels!!!

  5. Placing a cell in a Hypotonic Solution. Hypotonic means below strength Solution has a lower solute concentration than the cell. Water moves into the cell to try to balance. The cell plumps up!!!
