Sample of Recent Research • Babies recognize mother’s voice prenatally - and can discriminate mother’s voice as opposed to another person’s voice soon after birth • Infants learn language from the minute they are born - Infants hear a sound and try to reproduce it…vowel sound “A” • Newborns prefer hearing speech to non-speech sounds and can discriminate words that convey meaning on their own, for ex., nouns and verbs from those that don’t such as articles and conjunctions • At 6 months, babies recognize sounds from different languages but lose the ability by age one if not consistently heard • Babies need to hear “Motherese”- high pitched sound • Source: University of Montreal – Globe and Mail Article Dec 17, 2010 http://m.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/infants-give-mother-tongue-new-meaning/article1841469/?service=mobile

  9. New Structure Unification Strategy: Program Name: ECDC Birth- Six - No more PIAR B-6 or LCPC - Joint program with ITREB - 3 year old program being piloted in Chicago jointly with ITREB

  10. What is ECDC? Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) formerly knows as Project PIAR is designed for families with children under the age of six years. ECDC’s focus is on Parental Involvement during the early childhood years

  11. ECDC’s underlying principles:Positive, Informed Active and Regular Involvement of Parents P Positive: Parents need to have a positive attitude towards parenting their children. They need to have a vision of possibilities, so that they can move in that direction.

ECDC’s underlying principles:Positive, Informed Active and Regular Involvement of Parents IInformed: Once parents are informed about the possibilities, they can engage in discussions concerning what they want for their children. In the birth to three program we give parents information on a monthly basis.

ECDC’s underlying principles:Positive, Informed Active and Regular Involvement of parents AActive: Parents can align their intentions, establish priorities, set goals, define the tasks and a time line to actively pursue their goals together.  Suggestions for active involvement with children are given in every session.
