Brief history of World Day • Initiated in 1993 by RoadPeace • From 1995 observed by FEVR member orgs • as European Day of Remembrance • From 1998 observed beyond Europe and Pope calls it World Day • From 2004 the UN RSC pursues its adoption as a global event • In October 2005 a UN resolution to endorse World Day is adopted

World Day now • UN adoption made this Day known worldwide • The number of countries observing World Day has been growing with every year World Day offers the opportunity - to road safety campaigners and to governments - to point to the devastation caused by crashes - to offer recognition to road crash victims and - to give thanks to all those who help victims

Why is the Day important, according to victims? • “because lack of information about this catastrophe provokes social indifference” • “because road victims, like other victims, need to feel that they are not alone and that their suffering is considered by the community” • “because people are reminded to honour the dead by promising to behave correctly on the road to prevent future tragedies”
