HVAC Coils 101: What are HVAC Coils, and how do they work? The word HVAC is the acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. HVAC systems are a significant part of commercial and industrial establishments as they are responsible for maintaining an optimum temperature inside. But HVAC isn’t one single functioning unit; it is a system made up of different synchronized Parts, among which the HVAC coils are of substantial significance. The carrier evaporator coilsand other HVAC coils essentially function as heat exchangers. The cross-flow arrangement of the HVAC coils enables heat to transfer from air to liquid and vice versa in the process, which in turn keeps your ambiance at a regulated temperature. A brief overview of the HVAC Coils Mostly, there are two HVAC coils in a system; they are the evaporator coil in the indoor unit and the Trane condenser coilin the external air conditioning condenser. These coils are responsible for regulating the temperature and pressure of the coolant liquid or gas before passing it to another part of the heating and cooling system. In the HVAC system, the compressor in the external unit generally acts like a pump that pulls low-pressure refrigerant or coolant gas from inside an establishment and converts it into compressed gas. Simultaneously the heated gas is also forced over the exterior coil to cool off as the hot air from inside the establishment is blown outside. Then, the liquid flows into the evaporator coil inside the HVAC unit, and as the liquid enters the coil, it expands and cools down. As the liquid is cooler than the surrounding air, it absorbs the heat out of the system’s ductwork as per the thermodynamics principles. What are the evaporator coils? The evaporator coils are essentially located indoors in line with the ductwork. Based on whether the AC or furnace is engaged, the evaporator adds heat to the air to heat it or pulls heat from the existing air. In return, the refrigerant moves through the coil as the air is pushed over it to result in cool or warm air circulated inside the ductwork for temperature regulation. What are the Condenser Coils? Fundamentally, the condenser works to regulate the temperature of the refrigerant, which circulates through the condenser coil and changes temperature before being sent back to the evaporator coil. As the coil is located in the outdoor unit, the heat energy is transferred to the refrigerant in the evaporator coil to be released into the outdoor air. Conclusion It is understandable that given the different sizes and types available, replacing an HVAC coil can be quite intimidating.
