Why the 4 Year Degree is Dead? “The 4 year University Degree is officially dead.”
A confluence of technology, economics and a shift in the American culture have put the final nail in the coffin. Let’s step back a bit and see what we are dealing with.
A degree was a sacred key to life’s success in mainstream America’s opinion. This makes sense especially in first and second generation American homes where the parents or grandparents did not attend or attain a degree. We grew up in a world where our parents (on average ) improved the quality of their lives over their parents, and earnestly believed that we would do the same
This paradigm worked well for the last few decades. Education was held on to and administered tightly by mostly the rich and powerful (Ivy league schools) and admission was looked upon as a golden ticket to life. Second tier state and public universities were still highly regarded but offered no guarantees other then the promise of a solid 9-5 job and secure life.
Two factors have crept in over the last decade and overturned the apple cart on the paradigm. • Technology • Failing Economy Technology has enabled instantaneous knowledge share and communication like we’ve never experienced before. Now your neighbor can share what he knows in his youtube channel or streaming in a webinar. This is the power of technology and the modern age. No certificates of completion or grades but true knowledge exchange. As the last decade has progressed and the economy has worsened we have seen students go into deeper debt to pay for the ever increasing universities which they furtively hope will be their golden ticket to life’s success.
You are likely to ask a graduating high school student what plans they have and hear answers such as: • Join the peace corp. • Start a business • Backpack for a few years • Find a mentor in business and Apprenticeship
And who is to tell them they will not get the same or equivalent life experience, education or skill out of those experiences then going to a 5-6 year university? Amazing. This is the revolution – the education revolution which is happening around us today.
