  2. What Makes us Human?! • Sociologist think that our culture makes us human • Animals show some aspects of culture, but humans are one of a kind! • Examples of Canadian culture?

  4. Human Interactions and culture • Culture is so much more than the moments burned into our memory • Values are standards of what is seen as right and acceptable in a culture or society • Norms are the rules that dictate what people should do or how they should act

Jean vanier’s Characteristics of Humanity • All Human’s are sacred, regardless of their culture, race, religion, sexual orientation or their abilities. • We are constantly evolving and need to learn from our past to succeed in our future. • Working with others is key. • Human’s must make choices and be responsible for their lives and others. • Committing to a future that will be for the good of all.

  8. Right from Wrong • Starts around the age of 13 (according to Kohlberg, 1984). • At this age, children have the cognitive abilities to know right from wrong • Kohlberg described three levels with two stages each.

  11. Morality and research today • Psychologists study human development from the perspective of social and personal relationships. • Genetics plays a huge role, but psychologists stress the importance of environment in an individual’s cognitive and moral development

  12. Kohlberg’s Morality at work • Aliah wanted to skip school to go watch a movie. She decided to stay in class for fear of being caught. • Aaron’s friends think shoplifting is fun so long as they steal small objects. Aaron thinks stealing of any kind is wrong and doesn’t join them. • Jerome is a doctor in a war torn country. He allies himself with the rebels, but treats the enemy soldiers when he should be asleep. If he is caught he will be arrested. • Discuss which of the stages you think these examples fall under.

  13. Science and Morality • In groups of four (4), select one of organ transplants, animal organ to human transplants, genetic engineering or cloning and discuss the pros and cons of each. You will present your findings to the class, so write down notes! • Ask each other if the Scientist’s have stage five (5) and six (6) in mind while doing this work. • Can Science be done that is illegal/ seen as immoral , but still be in the best interest of all?
