Warm-Up • You are currently living in a farming community in pre-industrial Europe. You want to start up the first industrial society. What is the ONE RESOURCE that you want more of? Please explain in 3-5 sentences.
The Agricultural Revolution • Agricultural Revolution (1600s-1700s): a period of dramatically improved farming methods • "Thus not only will the same amount of land be able to feed more people; but each person, now with less labor, will be employed more productively and be able to satisfy the needs of society better." –Condorcet • More Food = More people • Better Tech = Less people working only to make food
Agricultural Innovations • Enclosure Movement: wealthy landowners enclose (put up fences) around fields • Now can experiment with new techniques • Small farmers now need new jobs (in factories!)
Agricultural Innovation • New Techniques • Fertilizer: cow poop makes plants grow! • Selective Breeding: breed best animals/plants to make the most food • Seed Drill: plant seeds deep to increase the amount that sprout • Crop Rotation: growing different crops one after the other to replenish soil • no more fallow (useless)land
