What is a sonnet? • Fourteen-line poem • Strict rhyme scheme • Specific structure • Written in iambic pentameter • iamb: an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable (ex: de-LAY) • “penta” means five, so it is a line made up of five iambs (10 syllables in total) • EX: a HORSE / a HORSE / my KING / dom FOR / a HORSE

Italian/Petrarchan Sonnets • These were the original sonnets • Named after Petrarch (Italy, 1304) • Rhyme scheme: ABBA / ABBA / CDE / CDE • This rhyme scheme can sometimes vary due to translations • The first two stanzas present a problem or question. The final two stanzas provide a resolution or answer.

  3. Petrarch’s Influence • Wrote poems directed to a distant, idealized beloved (Laura) • Described her as having golden hair, eyes like the sun/stars, skin like ivory/snow, cheeks like roses, movements like a goddess/angel

  4. English/Shakespearean Sonnets • Shakespeare made this form famous • He wrote 154 different sonnets! • Rhyme scheme: ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG • The first three stanzas develop/build upon a theme • The final couplet provides a conclusion and highlights the meaning of the poem
