  1. International Languages – Elementary/ African Heritage Programs mandated program since 1977 funded by Ministry of Education preserves the richness of cultural diversity in the school environment (45 % of students come from families whose first language at home is not English)

About the ILE-AH program… • 52 languages and an African Heritage program • there exists a rich and productive relationship with parents & communities • program is supported by local consuls – TDSB receives resources, texts, professional learning • providing new initiatives that support student learning here and overseas

  3. Why International Languages? • allows learners to connect with their cultural background • strengthens language proficiency (according to a number of study findings second language learning improved by first language skills)

  4. Why International Languages? • promotes understanding, equity and tolerance in a peaceful, sensitive and safe environment – (supporting Director’s Vision of Hope) • improves self-confidence and self-awareness in learners • helps prepare students for future success in an interconnected world

  6. Current Key Initiatives • Community involvement through partnerships • Development of curriculum resources • Annual International Language Symposium for instructors • Special cultural events with community involvement • Professional development opportunities for instructors
