Top 3 Diseases affecting the world • HIV/Aids • Malaria • Tuberculosis
HIV/AIDS • HIV is a virus. Viruses infect the cells of living organisms and replicate within those cells. A virus can damage the cells it replicates in, which is one of the things that can make an infected creature become ill. Then it can eventually turn into AIDS. • This affects men, women and children worldwide. • There are 5 million new cases each year. • Also 4 million deaths each year
Malaria • An infective disease caused by sporozoan parasites that are transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. • Prominent in developing countries like Africa. • 300-500 million new cases each year • 1.5-2.7 million deaths each year
Tuberculosis • An infectious disease caused by the tubercle bacillus and characterized by the formation of tubercles in body tissues, especially in the lungs. • Affects men, women and children worldwide. • There are 8 million new cases each year • Also 2 million deaths worldwide
Conclusion • I am currently in a program at the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute where we learn about these infectious diseases and the research being done on theses diseases. We also do different labs. Hopefully I will be able to help with the research in the future.
