Franklin Historic Preservation Program The City of Franklin is establishing a local historic preservation program to protect and enhance areas that feature historic architecture and reflect Franklin’s past.
The proven benefits of local historic preservation are many. • Protect the historic architecture that establishes a city’s unique identity. • Protect real estate investments by ensuring compatible change in historic areas. • Increase a community’s awareness and knowledge of its history. • Contribute to economic development through adaptive use of abandoned buildings. • Maintain, and revitalize walkable, pedestrian-friendly environments. • Reduce sprawl and new infrastructure requirements by using and improving existing buildings. • Attract visitors interested heritage tourism, resulting in more dollars spent in Franklin and at local businesses.
Franklin’s local preservation program will include: 1. A Local Preservation Ordinance, which establishes the program, and 2. Historic District Design Guidelines, one of the most important tools of the program.
Both documents are now ready for public review and comment at the following locations: • Department of Community Development • Ruth Camp Memorial Library • www. Franklinva.com
Public comment is encouraged, as is public participation in this on-going project. Franklin hosted a public meeting at the project kick-off in September 2005. Another public meeting will be held in the near future. Meeting dates will be announced here and in the local news media.
