  3. The 2nd Advent • Adventus: Latin for ‘visit of the King’. • Parousia: Greek for arrival, presence. Greek icon of Second Coming, c.1700

Isaiah: 11: 1-10 : Kingdom of Peace‘ • • The Spirit of the Lord Will Rest on Him’ (Isaiah 11:2-4). • The Spirit of the Lord points at the connection between heaven and earth. • Verse 2: Authority not by power but by the spirit. • The King as the Messiah = The Anointed, the Savior. The King as a righteous judge. • The meaning of peace: reality or vision. But also for us living in the reality of peace we can have also the vision for peace in the other parts of the world. • Shalom is more than ‘peace’. • Kingdom of Peace is not a prosper nation but a state of shalom. • Dutch: ‘geen heilstaat maar een staat van heil’.

Christmas as a serious matter • Simeon said to Mary and Josef when Jesus was presented in the temple, that Jesus was the promised Savior: “A light for revelation to the Gentiles and to the glory of your people Israel”(Luke 2: 32), but also to Mary Simeon said: “that a sword will pierce your own soul too”. • In the time that Jesus was on earth, people followed him for his great words and miracles, but at the feast of The Passover, the dead by crucifixion, there was no believe in Him anymore, this could not be the savior as expected.

  8. Romans 15: 4-13 Unity and no division • What is the kingdom of peace? The characteristics of the Christian fellowship is not ‘power’ but love, helping the poor. • Rom. 15:2 Paul says: “Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. • “See also verse 3 de position of Christ / Messiah. The oneness in Christ Jesus. • • Romans 15: 5-6: May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity ……… as you follow Christ Jesus. • Rom. 15: 9- 11 Israel together with the gentiles will praise the name of the Lord.

  9. The soul of the Kingdom of God • Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace. • Seek first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness. Matthew 6:33 • Righteousness and Justice are together with Grace and Mercy. • • There is no grace without justice. • • There is no mercy without a repentance. • • Micah 6:8: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”.

The second meaning of Advent • Mark 14: 60, 61 When Jesus is judged by the Sanhedrin, the high council of priests and the teachers of the law, the High priest asked Jesus “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”. “I am”, said Jesus, “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty one and coming on the clouds of heaven’. • Act 1:10 And when Jesus was partaken from his disciples on the mount of Olives and ascended to heaven, two angels dressed in white, said to the disciples “why do you stand here looking in the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven”. • 1 Thes. 4:16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Togetherness with Christ Jesus The Holy Communion • • The Spirit of the Lord will rest on the believers. • • Remembrance and partake in the fellowship as part of the body. • • Rom 15:12: the root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope. • • Rom 15: 13: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. • The basic of faith, hope and love.
