Tell ‘em what you’re going to tell ‘em, tell ‘em, and then tell ‘em what you told ‘em. The basic outline of a speech
The Summary • The summary is important because it reiterates your main points and helps to reinforce what you’re saying • HOWEVER, your summary should not be so repetitive that you are simply repeating what you just said word-for-word. • Make sure to restate your thesis in your summary • Wrap it up and move on
The Final Clincher or Final Impression • This is the part of your speech where you should challenge, inspire, or motivate your audience—Do you want your audience to take action based on what you’ve just said? This is the place where you tell them to contact their senator, join the movement, or stop smoking. • If your attention-getter was a question, you will want to answer that question in this section of your speech. • Keep in mind that the words you choose to end your speech with must • Fit the mood of your speech • Must make sense • They should bring some finality to your speech so that your audience realizes that you have finished.
Practice It! Imagine that you are given the opportunity to convince your teacher that you deserve an A in the class. Give your reasons, supply evidence, and then end with a quick summary. However, tell a story or give a personal example that would be an entertaining final clincher or final impression. You may either outline a speech or write it out word for word. Be creative. Be logical. Have fun.
