Recipients • Gentile believers (1:13) • Called of Jesus Christ • Beloved of God in Rome • Called as saints • Faith was being proclaimed throughout the whole world
Historical Setting • Paul had not been to Rome but longed to go • Paul was eager to preach the gospel to them in Rome • Wrote to admonish the Roman believers on some points • Wrote to warn against those who cause dissentions (16:17) • Tertius wrote the words of the letter (16:22)
Theme • Romans 1:16-17 • THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL LIVE BY FAITH
Romans 1 • God’s wrath revealed against men’s unrighteousness • Men are without excuse when they face His wrath • Theme: God’s righteousness in the gospel/His wrath against unrighteousness
Romans 2 • Repeated words: Judgment and Law • Gospel is for the Jew first and also for the Greek…..as is judgment • There is no partiality with God (2:11) • Verses 17-29 are about Jews • Theme: God’s judgment on all/Jews and the Law
Romans 3 • What advantage has the Jew? • Both Jews and Greeks are all under sin • There is none righteous (3:10) • Righteousness comes by faith in Jesus Christ (3:22) • God is just and justifier of one who has faith (3:26) • Theme: All have sinned, none righteous
Romans 3:7 • Romans 3:7 “If my rejection of the truth serves to make the truthfulness of God more apparent and thus increase His glory, then why am I still condemned as a sinner?”
Romans 4 • Abraham’s example of justification by faith • Abraham believed God and it was reckoned as righteousness (4:3) • Righteousness by faith, not works of the law • Theme: Abraham justified by faith, righteous
Romans 5 • The results of justification – peace with God, saved from His wrath (5:1&9) • Contrast between Adam and Christ (verses 12-21) • Theme: Peace with God, many made righteous by Christ’s death
Romans 5:13 • Explanation of Romans 5:13 • “Prior to the giving of the Law through Moses, sin was in the world. But technically it was not charged to our account as sin because there was no law to define it. One cannot break a law that does not exist. Nevertheless, death, the consequence of sin, was in effect from Adam until Moses, even for those who did not break a specific command like Adam’s.” Robert H. Mounce
