  1. Preparing Your Rifle For The Hunt Preparing Your Rifle For The Hunt When you set out on a hunting trip, you have to make sure you are well prepared, that your rifle is in top condition, that you have a good telescopic sight attached to it, and that you arrive with good ammunition. This means having to pay attention to, among the important issues, what type of ammunition you will use. There are essentially two types of ammunition that hunters and shooters use, and the rifle – the type and brand – will often play a part in your choice as well. The ammunition is the rimfire and the centerfire ammunition. The rimfire type of ammo has its so-called priming compound or mixture of chemicals that explodes when the firing pin or the hammer of the rifle, when the trigger is pulled, pushes the projectile out and towards target, in the rim/edge of the cartridge. Many hunters, also the new hunter, prefer the rimfire type of ammunition since they normally generate low pressure, with the result that the shooter feels much less recoil. Also, the rimfire ammunition causes much less noise when the shot is fired. The centerfire cartridge, on the other hand, has a much thicker brass case and they use what is referred to as a primer which looks lime a small button-like fixture in the center of the mentioned brass rim. This is the primer. These centerfire cartridges come in different sizes, which is good to know when you choose the ammunition for your rifle. They, generally speaking, operate at much higher pressure levels than do the rimfire type. They have more recoil and cause more noise/sound. For shooters and hunters it is good to know that several firearm brands are chambered for both types, even though rimfire and centerfire cartridges are not used interchangeably in the same rifle. Be sure to know how you rifle’s barrel is chambered. But that is not all. It is also important to know how your rifle performs with the telescopic sight you have attached on top. The question then comes up: Can I use a centerfire scope on a rimfire rifle? The short answer is yes. You can use a centerfire scope on a rimfire rifle, and vice versa. It is important to remember, however, that when you attach the centerfire scope (normally associated with big game hunting and not small prey such as what the rimfire is often used for) to a rimfire rifle, the base and rings must match up to the diameter of the specific centerfire scope you attach with the base and rings. An example of a firearm brand that offers rifles with both options a possibility (but not used interchangeably) is the Ruger, for example, that is available from various retailers. There are several others. Some of these retailers, such as the well-known DNZ Products of Sanford, NC offer all the options that shooters and hunters want to look at. Of course there are more retailers that offer these options, too. When it is time to choose the scope mount system you are going to use to attach your telescopic sight to your firearm, it is a good idea to visit these websites for information, and for choices in terms of which they can assist all shooters with their choices, to be sure that whether you use rimfire ammunition, or centerfire, you have the choice(s) of scope mount systems, as the scope mount system will indeed impact your success when you aim at a target. A good scope mount system from a leading retailer helps ensure a proper mount for your sight. There are some good retailers out there – also on the internet.
