  2. HIE WORKS WITH COMMUNITY WOODLAND GROUPS THROUGH ... • Community Assets Team (CAT), previously Community Land Unit • Community Account Management in Fragile Areas • Account Management of Social Enterprises

Community Land Statistics • Communities in Scotland own more land than: • National Trust for Scotland • John Muir Trust • RSPB • As at March 2012 more than 500,000 acres of land is in community ownership in Scotland • On the Western Isles 2/3 of the population live on land under community ownership

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? • community has control over land & land assets • woodlands • buildings & development land • water resources • minerals and sporting rights • Land managed for community benefit (employment, infrastructure, housing, tourism, amenity, social development, etc) • The key principles are: • Open membership • Community support, benefit & control • Non-profit distributing, but hopefully profit-making!

ASSET DEVELOPMENT AIMS • Support community-led regeneration to enable communities to have more control and influence • Support sustainable development at the local level (joined-up economic, social, environmental outcomes) • Enable communities to generate income for re-investment • Encourage more people to become actively involved in their community • Energise and transform communities

  6. What kind of projects can be funded? • Acquiring land: must have an end purpose that delivers outcomes for the local community (changes/impacts) • Acquiring or developing buildings – to generate income and deliver range of community services, directly, or indirectly • Sustainable development • renewable energy, waste recycling, energy efficient buildings • viable in longer-term

  7. Range of Assistance • Advice and Support • Capacity Building • Acquisition • Capital Funding • Revenue Funding • Case-by-case basis

  8. SCOTTISH LAND FUND • £6m programme over 3 years • £1m yr 1; £2m yr 2; £3m yr 3 • Delivered jointly by HIE and BIG Lottery • Land focused • Expressions of interest to HIE • Launch in summer 2012
