As we know earthworms crawl through the soil in their ecosystem. They dig long tunnels. An earthworm can dig a tunnel eight feet long. They eat the soil and dead plants as they dig. Every day, earthworms eat as much as they weigh. They need air in their ecosystem too. They use the air in their tunnels. When it rains, the tunnels fill with water. Then earthworms come out of the ground to breathe. Earthworms also help the soil. As they crawl, they break up the soil. The broken up soil is better for plants to grow in.
Knowing all this, we wanted to make a model of an earthworm habitat, so we took; A glass tank Garden soil sand Small pieces of dead leaves Earthworms Black paper Tape and water.
First we put the soil in the tank. We mixed the sand into the soil.
We put the small pieces of dead leaves on the top of the soil.
And we used a pencil to make small holes in the paper to let air in.
We removed the black paper after two weeks, and we found that they had made some tunnels in the soil and that most of the pieces of leaves had almost disappeared. We concluded that it was very interesting to see how earthworms live in their habitat.
