  3. Models of Curriculum • The Subject-Centered Model…core curriculum • The Teacher-Centered Model…the teacher decides what is taught • The Student-Centered Model…the student’s development, needs, interests are paramount

  4. Standards in Education • Content Standards • Performance Standards • Global movement, begun in U.S. as a response to “A Nation At Risk” (1983) • America 2000 (G.H.W. Bush), Goals 2000 (Clinton) national standards in English, math, science, history, geography…with rigorous testing

Approaches to Curriculum • Efficacy Institute: Smart is Something You Get If You Know How…high expectations, proficiency is the goal, emanating from work habits, resulting in successful outcomes • All children can reach a high level of learning in any academic area • Teacher is the key to success…to motivate, promote resiliency through persistence and commitment to excellence

Teachers help students move from dependence to independence (Vygotsky) • Each stage of development has a characteristic way of viewing the world (Bruner)
