  1. Why Kids on Bikes ? If NO ACTION is taken, and the current trend continues, the 31% of overweight/obese children in NZ at the moment will continue to escalate. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  2. Our Mission: “To promote the health and well being of children in New Zealand specifically from target groups and encourage these children to exercise regularly and safely through the provision of bicycles, helmets and safety equipment for fun exercise as part of their daily routine” KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  3. HOW IT WORKS The Trustees of the Kids On Bikes Charitable Trust (KOB Trustees), offer selected Intermediate Schools the opportunity to adopt this Program designed for a specific target group of Kids. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  4. HOW IT WORKS Having obtained endorsement from its Teachers and Board, and the permission from the kid’s parent(s), guardian(s) and/or caregiver(s), the school offers KOB’s program to the students in the target group KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  5. HOW IT WORKS The KOB Trustees raise funds from central/ local government, corporations, businesses and the wider community to purchase and supply suitable new bikes and ancillary safety/ security equipment such as helmets, safety jackets, safety lights, bike locks/ chains to the school. All this equipment becomes the property of the school. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  6. HOW IT WORKS The School then loans the equipment to the student under a “KOB Contract” (Its purpose is to help the child learn to be responsible for property in his/her care and to honour a contract). KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  7. HOW IT WORKS The bike supplier, assisted by volunteer adult KOB cyclists, adjustsbikes and helmets etc. to fit each selected child KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  8. HOW IT WORKS The NZ Police train the selected students in Cycle Road Safety. Upon passing this training, the child is awarded a “Probationary Cycle License” which, after a few weeks of riding to school is converted into a “Full License” KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  9. HOW IT WORKS To raise cycling, fitness, and nutrition awareness for all kids, the school may choose to make the “Program Launch” a whole day event encouraging all kids who ride bikes to participate. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  10. HOW IT WORKS The children have full use of the equipment provided they adhere to their contracts. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  11. HOW IT WORKS A child who has taken full advantage of the program during his/ her two years at intermediate school can achieve ownership of the bike and equipment through the accumulation of “Bike Dollars”, which are awarded to those that fulfil their KOB Contract commitments. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  12. HOW IT WORKS KOB Trustees require that each school regularly monitors the performance of kids selected for the program based on a set of benchmark criteria decided mutually between KOB Trustees and the school. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  13. HOW IT WORKS The monitoring criteria could include: (i) a weigh-in at the beginning of the program and regularly thereafter, (ii) attitude in class, (iii) any improvement in class room work, and (iv) any improvement in out-of-class behaviour etc. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  14. HOW IT WORKS The selected kids would also be required to complete feedback forms at the end of the program with the schools forwarding this, together with its own monitoring results, onto KOB Trustees. KIDS ON BIKES Charitable Trust Established 14 February 2006 www.kidsonbikes.co.nz

  15. HOW IT WORKS Using funds raised, KOB Trustees will continue to sustain each school program by supplying new replacement equipment as kids complete the two year program and achieve full ownership as a result of “Bike Dollars” earned.
