Madison Initiative for Undergraduates Improving the quality of undergraduate education and the undergraduate experience while remaining affordable Goals Total Institutional Need-Based Aid For Undergraduates (millions of dollars) Example Projects • Preserve affordability of a UW-Madison education • Generate faculty and instructional support to offer the courses, majors and experiences students need. • Expand best practices and innovation in teaching and learning, curricular design, and student services in order to enhance undergraduate student learning and their educational experience At A Glance See madisoninitiatve.wisc.edu Campus welcomes new transfer students University Health Services initiates mental health case-management program Recruiting the best Cows, up close and personal New GreenHouse for sustainability nurtures community Enhanced services for students considering health careers Language program opens professional doors, boosts job prospects for students New advising system keys student success, progress 35 projects funded 6,057 students received grants to offset additional tuition charges, based on family income 900 students enrolled in 45 First-year Interest Groups, an increase of 50% over Fall 2009 Funding $13M in MIU funds awarded in Rounds 1 & 2 Tuition differential assessed to undergraduates will make available approximately $10M in 2009-10, $20M in 2nd year, $30M in 3rd year, $40M in 4th year and thereafter Funds allocated go directly into base 101 budgets 54.5 new faculty positions added Academic and Career Advising 11 new faculty hired and already teaching Academic and student support Greatest Success Faculty hiring for course expansion, access to majors, improved educational experience High Impact Practices, Educational Innovation Projects Engaging the entire campus on projects that improve undergraduate experience Review $5.1 million in need-based financial aid added as a result of MIU in 2009-10 Key to Success: Half of funds are used for need-based aid pool Half of funds are allocated through a bottoms up, creative “call for proposals” process • Clear Goals • Clear criteria for review and impact • Ongoing impact accountability Future Focus • $3.8 Million to allocate for round 3 • In the process of allocating budgets for round 3 • Yearly Accountability to assess and assure campus impact A Student Board appointed by ASM and the MIU Oversight Committee review proposals and make recommendations to the chancellor on funding decisions ContactsAaron Brower - ambrower@wisc.edu Mo Bischof, Eden Inoway-Ronnie, Jocelyn Milner, Sheila Voss madisoninitiatve.wisc.edu
