  2. What is it? How or why does it occur within the body? • Diabetes, or Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which the body is unable to properly process glucose into energy. • This has to do with the lack of insulin produced by the pancreas-- or the body’s inability to properly react to the hormone being released. • Diabetes is a problem because the body’s cells are not getting the energy it needs from glucose and the glucose is staying in the bloodstream, which can be fatal to the body. (Wrha.mb.ca, 2014)

  3. There are two types of diabetes. • Type 1 Diabetes;also known as ‘Juvenile Diabetes’, occurs when the body produces little to no insulin. Insulin is a hormone which the pancreas releases that helps glucose-- or sugar-- transfers from, the bloodstream to fat and muscle in order to give energy to the body. Type 1 Diabetes is insulin dependent; meaning the body needs insulin injections in order to function properly. Type 1 Diabetes is called ‘Juvenile Diabetes’ due to it appearing more in those under the ages of 30. The second type of Diabetes is Type 2 Diabetes which is 90% of the population that has diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the body creates insulin, but does not react to it, causing the glucose to, once again, not be processed into energy. Plenty of people who have Type 2 Diabetes do not know it, and this form is not insulin dependent.

  4. Causes of this illness There is no exact cause for diabetes, however, there are common contributing factors or triggers for each Type. For Type 1 Diabetes • -Viral or Bacterial Infection in the pancreas • -Chemical toxins within food • -Unidentified component causing autoimmune reaction (Autoimmune reaction is the body’s immune system attacking and destroying the insulin’s beta cells) For Type 2 Diabetes • -Obesity • -Living a sedentary lifestyle • -Bad diet • -Increasing age

  5. Prevention of this illness Sadly, Type 1 Diabetes is not preventable because it is a chemical reaction that occurs in the body through means that we cannot control. However, Type 2 Diabetes is preventable. Ways to prevent Type 2 Diabetes is to improve your diet and lose weight. Type 2 Diabetes is something most people bring upon themselves by not eating healthy and staying sedentary which eventually causes obesity which is a contributing factor to Type 2 Diabetes. Tips would be to exercise daily, eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, and stick to fibre. It will help improve your blood sugar control, promote weight loss by helping you feel full, and lower your risk of heart disease as well!

  6. Who is most likely to be affected? The people that are most likely to be affected by diabetes are people who have diabetes in their family history which it would most likely pass along to you. The 2nd factor that increases a persons chance of getting diabetes is their age. As your age increases the chances of you having diabetes increases as well. “African Americans, Mexican Americans, American Indians, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans have a higher risk for diabetes.” (American Diabetes Association, 2014)

  7. What are the symptoms? http://yourmedguide.com/2013/12/do-you-have-type-2-diabetes.html (Sury,2014)
