Entrepreneurial Institute Concept Presented by Susan K. Jones and Shirish Grover on behalf of FerrisFirst! SPARC Meeting July 12, 2011
Background and Rationale ● All other public universities in Michigan have some form of Entrepreneurial institute, center or program – Ferris does not – a “glaring gap” ● Entrepreneurial and Innovation skills are vital for the Workforce of Tomorrow (see Anne Saliers comments in white paper) ● West Michigan/Grand Rapids is a hotbed of entrepreneurship from Meijer and Amway to scores of locally owned and run manufacturing and service firms – many potential sources of support (see next slide)
Sources of Support: West Michigan Economic Development Organizations
Background and Rationale, continued ● A way to encourage Ferris graduates to sink deep roots in Michigan – and/or to explore global opportunities for entrepreneurship ● A fertile “naming opportunity” for one or more FSU supporters/alumni who are entrepreneurs ●To differentiate and to gain support from various publics, our Institute must be unique. How so?
Uniqueness based on Ferris State’s Strengths ● Cross-Disciplinary – Most every college at Ferris can contribute and participate (All other such Michigan institutes and programs are encapsulated in a College of Business or College of Engineering/Technology) ● Global – The Entrepreneurial Institute and the Center for Global Studies and Engagement will work together
Getting Started – First Steps ● “Quick Win” – Campus-Wide Entrepreneurial Speakers’ Series as early as Fall 2011 ● Curricular Innovation – Cross-Disciplinary Certificate, Minor and eventually Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurial Studies (BES) – more information available upon request ● Structure and Support – Recruit cross-disciplinary faculty team to develop these curricula and provide ideas for speakers across many disciplines
Competitive Research Professor Shirish Grover will present results of his research into existing entrepreneurial programs in Michigan and beyond
